East Grand School District Rolls Out New Salad Bars in Elementary Schools

Do you know that when students eat better, they do better in school, too? The administrators and school food professionals in East Grand School District, a participant in LiveWell’s School Food Initiative (SFI) 2016 cohort, know that by offering salad bars in their schools, they’re making the healthy choice the easy choice for students. Watch the video below to see East Grand’s salad bars in action!

“One of the biggest benefits of the salad bar is flexibility,” says SFI Chef Chris Hazle. “It offers the school nutrition staff flexibility with menu planning and more options for the students to choose from. Most importantly, it helps students establish healthy eating habits that they’ll carry with them throughout their lives.” And research from both the USDA and CDC concur; fresh fruit and vegetable consumption increases when children are provided with a variety of choices via a school salad bar.
